Over at Basketball Prospectus, Kevin Pelton has dug through the numbers of the NBA season and come up with his picks for All-Star reserves.
Thunder guard and Sixth Man of the Year candidate James Harden makes Kevin’s team.
I wrote earlier this month how the Thunder may have three All-Stars on this roster and apparently I am not alone in feeling this way. Harden has had a breakout year that really started last year in the playoffs.
He’s averaging 16.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game this season and third among shooting guards in the NBA with a PER of 22.21 behind only Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade.
Of course, PER isn’t everything and often favors players who play less minutes and are overly efficient. Harden smoewhat fits that mold and as you can see Kevin favors these types of players as he also picks Paul Millsap as a West reserve while leaving off Monta Ellis, Steve Nash and Pau Gasol.
We Thunder faithful love Harden as much as anyone and seeing him as an All-Star would be great, I just doubt it will happen this year. We’ll find out Thursday night on TNT when the full All-Star rosters will be revealed.
