James Harden scores career-high 40 as Thunder beat Suns 109-97

James Harden scored a career-high 40 points Wednesday night as the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Phoenix Suns 109-97.

Kevin Durant also had a big game but was kind of shadowed by Harden’s scoring 29 points (20 in the second half) to go with 11 rebounds and five assists.

The Suns came out of the gates hot but cooled down once Harden checked in. Harden scored 19 in the first half as the Thunder led 52-45 at the break.

Harden had only been averaging 13.0 points per game over his last eight but playing against the Suns is something he likes to do scoring his then career-high 30 points the last time these teams played on March 7.

Date Points Rebounds Assists FG’s Threes FT’s
March 7 30 4 1 8-12 4-7 10-11
April 18 40 7 3 12-17 5-8 11-11

The Thunder did a great job as a team tonight getting to the line. They made 31-of-34 attempts.

Durant led the way in being aggressive once the second half started. He scored just nine points and was 3-of-10 from the field in the first half and really took advantage of poor interior presence by Marcin Gortat by attacking every chance he got.

Russell Westbrook didn’t have the greatest shooting night again going 6-of-16 from the field and scoring 15 points. He also had five assists and three turnovers.

The Thunder and Spurs both won tonight so the Thunder remain a half game back of the first seed in the West. Phoenix drops out of the eighth spot with the loss while Utah slips in.

This was the third game of a five-game road trip for the Thunder. They will be in Sacramento (20-42) for their next game Friday night.
