The Oklahoma City Thunder can celebrate but their work is far from done

The Oklahoma City Thunder have been more than impressive so far in the playoffs. They’ve won eight of their nine games and beaten the two teams that won the past three NBA titles.

They still have a long way to go this season and they know it.

The San Antonio Spurs are waiting for the Thunder in the Western Conference Finals. The Thunder have made it to the WCF for the second year in a row and again will play a more experienced team that has been there before.

The Spurs are in a sense this year’s Dallas Mavericks. They win in a similar way relying on great ball movement, perimeter shooting and overall selflessness. They’re willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to win another title and have the blue print to do so.

The Thunder are still so very young and from that perspective are overachieving in a way. Their four best player are 23 years or older and yet it sometimes feels like they’ve been playing together forever.

That might be the biggest thing that saves this Thunder team. The Spurs may be like last year’s Mavericks but the Thunder aren’t last year’s Thunder.

They are better in every way. They understand much better what they need to do to win. And they also happen to be the most talented team in the NBA.

What happens when the most talented team in the NBA starts to figure it out? They start winning titles. At that point, it really doesn’t matter how old you are.

The Spurs have certainly been the best team in the NBA this season. They haven’t lost in the playoffs and haven’t lost in general since April 11. But if you had to pick a team that could beat them, wouldn’t it be the Thunder?

The Thunder definitely have the tools to beat San Antonio. The Thunder are one of the most athletic teams in the league and one of the best at defending perimeter shooting. While the Spurs feasted on the Thunder’s over anxiousness in the regular season, OKC has proven to be able to turn it up on defense in the playoffs.

When the Thunder are locked in, no one beats them. This is what should scare the Spurs. The Thunder have total control in this series. They can ultimately determine the outcome.

The Spurs are going to play their game and execute to near perfection. But they aren’t going to overpower the Thunder in anyway. It’s in no way impossible for OKC to rise to the occasion.

The two best teams in the NBA will play Game 1 of the WCF Sunday at 8:30 p.m. EST on TNT. You can pick whatever team you think will win the series and you wouldn’t be wrong choosing either.
