The Oklahoma City Thunder announced today that they will assign rookie Perry Jones III to their D-League affiliate Tulsa 66ers.
The Thunder have now sent down Jones III, rookie Jeremy Lamb, Daniel Orton and DeAndre Liggins to the 66ers. Liggins recalled back to the team over the weekend.
Jones III was thought to possible have more of a chance to crack the Thunder’s rotation early in the season after a successful training camp and preseason. He’s only played in 10 games so far this season averaging 7.6 minutes, 1.2 points and 1.4 rebounds.
Jones III looks very hesitant in the limited minutes he’s received. Rarely has he aggressively looked for his shot. He’s settling for midrange jump shots rather than taking the ball to the rim and everything he does looks rushed.
When he’s been able to do it, he’s shown that he is freakishly athletic but those opportunities have been few and far between.
Jones III has been used as a three and stretch four at times this season. His great athleticism makes him able to guard multiple positions but he still has a lot to learn defensively as far as rotations and defending the pick-and-roll go.
Looking at the Thunder roster you would really want Jones III to develop into someone they can use come playoff time. When you look at a potential matchup with the Miami Heat and who the Thunder can put on LeBron James, after Kevin Durant and Thabo Sefolosha, Jones III looks like the best option.
Sefolosha has been playing more minutes this season instead of Jones III getting a shot. Hopefully, Jones III will get some good experience in the D-League and comes back to the Thunder later on this season more prepared to contribute.
