The rumor is that Marc Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies is going to be named the Defensive Player of the Year.

Other popular candidates who will probably come in close behind him in the voting include Larry Sanders, Joakim Noah, LeBron James, Tony Allen and the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Serge Ibaka.

Kendrick Perkins can’t believe that it’s not Ibaka, who led the league in blocked shots for the second straight year, who is going to win the award.

The fact is that voters for these awards have wisened up in recent years and no longer look at blocked shots with as much importance in determining who the Defensive Player of the Year is.

While Ibaka is good for 2-3 blocks per night and plenty of impressive ones at that, his overall defense isn’t on the same level as other players.

Ibaka is always biting much too frequently on pump fakes leaving his teammates in tough situations defensively. Ibaka will get abused at times by a savvy post player like Pau Gasol or Dirk Nowitzki.

Ibaka also is prone to getting lost in defending the pick-and-roll which was most evident vs. the New York Knicks and Miami Heat this season.

Ibaka is a great defender whose impact on that end of the floor is elite. But the weaknesses in his defense right now are what’s holding him back from getting this award.

Perkins went on to also say that he believes Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook should be on the First Team All-NBA team. Durant will definitely make it but Westbrook probably won’t while Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, Tony Parker or even James Harden will likely make the team instead of him.

Love the support of his teammates from Perk.
