Jalen Rose and Bill Simmons are going through and previewing every NBA team on the Grantland Channel these past few weeks leading up to the season.
Rose had some interesting comments recently on OKC and its two stars, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.
Rose said that he believes Durant will go to Houston when his contract is up in 2016, and a year later Westbrook will go to LA when his contract is up.
Rose didn’t say that KD and Russ were upset about the Harden trade, but he compared OKC to Chicago and Indiana in that they were all teams who developed three All-Stars, but OKC was the only one to let one of them go. To be fair with that comment, the trio of KD-Russ-Harden was much more talented than any trio elsewhere, except for maybe Miami, meaning it was going to be much harder to keep those three.
Rose also mentions how Durant recently sold his house to move closer to the city. Houston has a reputation of being a city that really attracts NBA players.
Rose and Simmons didn’t go into much further detail. For instance, would Houston be able to give Durant a max contract by 2016. I mean, wouldn’t Durant be sacrificing some cash to head to Houston, who already has Harden and Dwight on max deals.
What about how loyal KD is and would he really want to be joining others to try and win a title like LeBron did? I’m not so sure he would make that decision.
Rose has no inside information here. This is just a prediction about something that will happen three years from now.
The real thing you get from this is that he basically feels OKC won’t win a title in that time span. There are a lot of people who are just writing OKC off as title contenders after the Harden trade. I think that’s going a little too far.
The Thunder need to either win a title or get extremely close to doing so before Durant’s contract is up to ensure he stays. Otherwise, I could see him at least thinking about leaving.
