NBA Trade Rumors: OKC Thunder to involve Ryan Gomes in 3-team deal?

The first real trade rumor involving the Oklahoma City Thunder has been reported.

ESPN’s Marc Stein says the Thunder may involve Ryan Gomes in a three-team deal with the Boston Celtics and Memphis Grizzlies.

Word is that OKC's Ryan Gomes will be added to trade to and goes to Boston … with Celtics then expected to waive Gomes

Thunder involvement in this manner would create some extra luxury-tax wiggle room for OKC … presumably to set them up for another trade

Gomes hasn’t played a meaningful minute all season and even when the Thunder acquired him, no one really expected him to this season.

It looks like the Thunder are deciding now to try and find some value for Gomes. Whether it’s to prepare for a future trade or to sign another player we don’t know exactly yet.

The biggest need that comes to mind first is the Thunder acquiring another point guard aid in surviving while Russell Westbrook is out.

Unless the Thunder also unload a player who is currently in the rotation, I feel it is unlikely they get a player who will enter the rotation.

Scott Brooks is notorious to sticking to his guys. When it comes to the point guard situation, Derek Fisher is one of those guys. It’d have to be a real big name to get into the rotation. Remember last year, Ronnie Brewer wasn’t even able to crack the rotation.

As far as current rotation players go who could be involved in a future trade, it’s hard to see any player jumping out. All of the young guys from Jeremy Lamb, Steven Adams and Perry Jones have been having quality seasons. I don’t think this is the season when you look to trade one of those three guys unless you can get someone really solid in return.

For now, the Thunder do appear to be parting ways with Gomes. As always, the goal is to put themselves in a situation to be more flexible when it comes to making moves and forming their roster.
