It’s nearing draft time, so there is no shortage of rumor and speculation running rampant through the internet and social media! The Oklahoma City Thunder find themselves involved in these whispers due to the fact they have two first round draft picks and some decisions to make with their current personnel.
Most recently, there has been talk that the Thunder are very keen to secure the services of Kristaps Porzingis in the 2014 NBA Draft. Prozingis is a true seven footer from Latvia. He is raw, needs to put on plenty of bulk and size to bang with the bigger NBA bodies, but has far too much natural talent and ability to pass up. At just 18 years of age, there is no denying this would be a “draft and stash” pick for the Thunder but it could pay huge dividends.
Currently balling over in Spain with fairly mild numbers (6 ppg 3 rpg) they don’t really tell the full story and definitely don’t show what this young guy can do on a basketball court. For his full draft profile click HERE (courtesy of nbadraft.net) and check out some of his highlights.
As you can see from the footage, Porzingis has great footwork, tremendous length and athleticism and a natural knack for playing the game. With a year or two to strengthen his wiry frame and develop his game, he could be exactly what the Thunder need to complete the championship picture.
He has a solid jump shot that will only get better and good range, right out to the three point line. This would be very useful in assisting to space the floor for OKC and provide Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook more room to operate. The Thunder already have a replacement for Kendrick Perkins in Steven Adams, and while Perk and Nick Collison will be around for at least another year, beyond that is anyone’s guess.
Taking Porzingas would provide some frontcourt assistance to the Thunder, who would then have a rotation of Serge Ibaka, Adams and Porzingas himself. Not a bad trio to complement the dynamic duo of Durant and Westbrook.
While nothing is official yet and won’t be until draft night, this rumor has plenty of legs – because it makes sense. Of course, the plan might not play out this way, as many mock drafts have Porzingis being taken well before the Thunder are on the clock at #21.
