When Kevin Durant shocked Team USA by withdrawing from the FIBA World Championships – many wondered why this may have been the case. Durant has been a tremendous servant for USA Basketball over the journey, so for him to remove himself from the equation was a little out of character. Many feared it was due to the injury suffered by Paul George, but KD was quick to clarify it was physical and mental fatigue that had forced him into the tough decision.
Over the past few weeks, plenty of discussion has surrounded the reigning MVP. His minutes have been heavily looked at, some have even gone and called him out suggesting he “quit” rather than withdrew and of course the most recent theory surrounds his agent Jay Z, his pending Nike or Under Armour deal and much more. Jerry Colangelo had made a statement regarding Kevin and his “contractual situation” not allowing him to participate, which only fueled the fire.
Those comments were made in regards to Kevin Love, not Kevin Durant as previously reported. In a misunderstanding between reporters and USA Basketball staff, what was originally reported has been clarified and Durant can now cease to be the focus of heavy scrutiny.
Team USA secured their first warm up win over Brazil and Derrick Rose, Anthony Davis and others lead the way in Durant’s absence. For the record too, Durant has still not decided as to whether he will team up with Nike or Under Armour and he certainly hasn’t ruled out returning to Team USA for the 2016 Olympics.
