Welcome to OKC Thunder – In the news for Monday, July 17, featuring topical daily news on your favorite team and the NBA.

OKC Thunder In the News for July 17 column focuses on Russell Westbrook. One article examines how (if and when he signs the Designated Player Exception) his deal could potentially surpass James Harden. Another looks at one of Westbrook’s favorite past times – fashion.

Westbrook could make history with DPE:

Ever wonder how it feels to be James Harden? He’s missed out on winning MVP twice, the most recent at the hands of former teammate Russell Westbrook. And, should Russ decide to put pen to paper on his own Designated Player Exception contract he’ll usurp the beard again. For now, James Harden holds the richest contract in NBA history. The two LA born players are friends, but sure feels like the Brodie keeps getting the upper hand at being able to throw shade at his buddy.

Bruno Manrique of Clutch Points article outlines the details:

"Russell Westbrook can receive a five-year, $207 million super-max extension in addition to his $28.7 million salary for this 2017-18 season — amounting to a contract worth more than $235 million and putting his annual salary to a $39.2 million annual salary — a U.S. professional sports record, according to Erik Horne of The Oklahoman. However, the amount of the extension could change by a few million with the salary projection and what he’s willing to take."

Westbrook to attend Sports Illustrated Fashion Event:

Sports Illustrated second annual Fashionable 50 list will take place Tuesday, July 18. Russell Westbrook is among those on the list and will also be attendance. The cover and full list will be presented at the event. Sports Illustrated offers the full details here

It’s not surprising Sports Illustrated has recognized the marriage of fashion with sports. Similar to the way music has become synonymous with sports it was a natural progression for style and sports to combine.

"For the second consecutive year, the editors at Sports Illustrated teamed up with experts across the sports and fashion industries to select the world’s 50 most fashionable athletes. The expert panel includes InStyle executive editor Faye Penn, People deputy style director Sharon Kanter, NBA commentator and style icon Walt Clyde Frazier, athlete stylists and more. The event will bring together current and former professional athletes, models, celebrities and insiders in the fashion world to celebrate the intersection of sports and fashion."

4 Burning OKC Thunder Questions:

More from Thunderous Intentions

Erik Horne of News OK serves up four questions for OKC Thunder fans. Among them are when Terrance Ferguson will sign his rookie contract. Another asks a question many of the writers at TI have mulled over — is Sam Presti done making moves? And, of course the big question when or if Russell Westbrook will sign his OKC Thunder DPE contract.

"Between posting 3:45 a.m. baby feedings on his Snapchat and making appearances at the Kids Choice Awards, Westbrook certainly has time to sign what would be the biggest payout in NBA history, right? While there have been rumblings that Westbrook could sign an extension worth more than $235 million this week, nothing has been confirmed. Westbrook makes decisions at his own pace, but multiple sources have indicated the Thunder remains confident he’ll re-sign."

That wraps up OKC Thunder In the News for July 17. Have a great week and make sure to check back with TI tomorrow  and for the latest news on your favorite team.
