Welcome to OKC Thunder – In the news for Sunday, July 23, featuring topical daily news on your favorite team and the NBA.

OKC Thunder in the news  for July 23 continues to focus on Russell Westbrook’s extension with teammate Nick Collison commenting. Further Brodie is finally taking some time to enjoy the offseason after his whirlwind of award shows. And Gideon Lim continues his film festival series with a look at Alex Abrines.

Nick Collison on Russell Westbrook Extension:

Remarkably in 15 NBA seasons, this was the very first time Nick Collison was a free agent. Every time his contract was nearing it’s end he was simply extended. This includes his time with both the Seattle SuperSonics and the OKC Thunder. Likewise, this is also the first time for Russell Westbrook to enter free agency. Collison was in OKC to sign his contract, one which is likely to be his last in the pros. While there he discussed Westbrook’s impending designated player exception deal. Erik Horne‘s article in News OK offers the details

"“He’s gonna do what he wants to do. There’s nobody that’s gonna talk him into anything,” Collison said of Westbrook potentially signing an extension. “Similar to me, he knows he’s been treated really well here and things have gone really well here. It’s up to him. He’s gonna make whatever decision he’s gonna make.“Whether he does it or not, he’s gonna come into the season the same way ready to go, ready to compete and play.”"

Westbrook enjoying the offseason and parenthood:

Alysha Tsuji is a great Twitter follow if you want to keep up to speed on what NBA stars are up to. She posted 3 great tweets recently highlighting Russell Westbrook out with wife Nina in Cabo San Lucas. They highlight Brodie singing and dancing. The best one is the last pictured as Russ continues to entertain until son Noah cries. At this point Russ stops and we hear his nickname for his son No-no (Noah). Adorable.

Film Festival with Alex Abrines:

If you missed Gideon Lim‘s Film Festival series take the time to check it out. In the fifth installment he breaks down  Alex Abrines, showcasing his strengths and weaknesses via film.

"Check out this beauty of an elevator play, straight out from the Warriors playbook."

"Joffrey Lauvergne starts behind the line and mimics a dribble hand-off with Semaj Christon. Meanwhile, Abrines, the smallest guy on the court, prepares to post E’Twaun Moore up, which the New Orleans Pelicans readily stomach. But, as soon as Christon receives the ball, Abrines bursts towards the top of the key, and the two Thunder bigs shut the door on the scrambling Moore. Even though Lauvergne’s man reads the play and contests well, Abrines has already found a rhythm and makes the shot easily."

That wraps up OKC Thunder In the News for July 23. Have a wonderful Sunday, see you back here tomorrow.
