Anyone seen any good movies this summer? With no OKC Thunder basketball to take up my nights, I’ve been to plenty.

Pool in the afternoon. Movies at night. That’s been my summer. As I’ve watched these movies, I started to notice something about certain ones. They all reminded me of certain offseason events. I began to think that movies are just over dramatized versions of what happens in the NBA. That the entertainment industry revolves around basketball. That the earth is flat.

Alright, I didn’t go quite that far.

But I did see some parallels between what I watched this summer and what’s transpired in Oklahoma City this offseason.

Baby Driver – The Paul George Trade

A heist that no one saw coming. The jokes about Baby Driver prior to its release was that it would be confused with Boss Baby. People thought it would die based on the name alone. It over-performed at the box office and was well-received by everyone who saw it. I loved it. I don’t like Ansel Elgort, but I loved this movie. It would have been better with Miles Teller, but Elgort was good.

And that’s pretty much the Paul George trade. Sam Presti pulled off a heist. Everyone joked that he had no assets. But he over-performed and somehow got Paul George. Yeah, Kevin Durant is better. But Paul George is going to be very good in this role.

Captain Underpants – The Patrick Patterson and Ray Felton Signings

More from Thunderous Intentions

Under the radar with strong potential. I loved the Captain Underpants books as a child. I was excited to see this movie. My friends of the same age didn’t know who Captain Underpants was and had no desire to see it. We saw it, we liked it. It wasn’t the best film of the summer and it didn’t clean up at the box office. But it was better than a lot of stuff out this summer and still did well for itself. It was cheap to make and wasn’t Transformers.

Patrick Patterson and Ray Felton are good signings that helped fill out the roster and address glaring weaknesses. Are there better players at their position? Yes. But both players are better than what OKC Thunder had for the majority of last season. Patterson is better than Domantas Sabonis at this point in their careers and Felton is a million times better than Semaj Christon. These are good moves that didn’t cost a lot.

Cars 3 – Those Carmelo Anthony Rumors

Cars 3 was fine. It wasn’t my favorite movie of the series and it wasn’t necessary, but it was fine. It was the worst of the three films in terms of box office, but it was still number one during opening weekend. I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it again, but I’m glad I saw it once.

MUST READ: The pros and cons of trading for Carmelo Anthony

Carmelo Anthony in 2017 is pretty much Lightning McQueen. He’s not necessary and it’s fair to wonder why OKC would want him, but he’s still an upgrade over Enes Kanter. The fit is weird and who knows if it’ll work, but Presti isn’t dealing the farm for him. You’re happy OKC is still trying to improve, you had fun engaging on social media over the rumors, but nothing is coming of them.
