Top 5 Centers in OKC Thunder History
No. 1 – Jack Sikma
With a lack of talented big men throughout their history, Jack Sikma is an easy choice for #1. Drafted 8th overall by the team in 1977, he was the starting center for the SuperSonics 1979 Championship team and a seven-time all-star. In nine seasons with the organization, he averaged 16.8 points and 10.8 rebounds. He currently sits second all-time in minutes played for the organization, fourth in total points, and first in total rebounds by a wide margin.
Taken with the 8th pick in the 1977 draft, Sikma stood out from the pack with his curly blonde hair. His skills weren’t too shabby either. In an era where it’s smart to foul poor, free throw shooting centers, that wouldn’t have worked with Sikma on the floor. A career 84.9% free throw shooter, Sikma is the most accurate shooting center from the foul line in league history.
During the team’s title run in 1979, Sikma averaged a double-double and was the anchor in the middle of Gus Williams and Dennis Johnson.
Sikma was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in 1986 as the Sonics underwent rebuilding. He retired in 1991 and accepted a role on the Sonics bench as an assistant coach in 2003. His #43 is one of six numbers retired by the Sonics franchise.
