The Thunder and Suns traded blows early, but with the score tied 7-7 at the 8:26 mark of the 1st, the Thunder sparked a 20-5 run to claim a 27-12 lead with 3:40 to play in the quarter. However, the Suns were not quite ready to go away at this point, and ended the quarter with a 17-2 run to tie the game at 29-29.
Both teams went shot for shot to start the second, and the Suns were even able to take the lead 42-41 with 7:11 to go in the first half. From there, the Thunder put together a 10-3 run that gave them a 51-45 lead, and a bit of breathing room with 4:40 remaining in the 2nd. Despite the Suns cutting the lead slightly at points, the Thunder would push back, and take a 60-54 lead to the locker room at halftime.
With the lead 62-58 in the Thunder’s favor at the 9:31 mark of the 3rd quarter, the Thunder hit on a 14-5 run to extend their lead 76-63 with 3:52 remaining in the quarter. The Suns did what they could, cutting the lead to 82-75 with 1:29 left in the 3rd, only for the Thunder to score 7 unanswered to extend the lead 89-75 with 32.5 seconds to play in the quarter. The Suns would answer with a driving reverse layup with 16.2 seconds remaining, and the Thunder would go into the 4th up 89-77.
The Suns were not having much success cutting into the lead in the 4th. To make matters worse for them, with the score 96-87, and 8:16 left to play, the Thunder hit on another run. This one was a 20-5 run that pretty much sealed the deal, giving the Thunder a 116-92 lead with 4:19 remaining. A late 8-2 run by the Suns proved meaningless, as the Thunder still had a 118-100 lead with less than 3 minutes to play. The Thunder would outscore the Suns 6-3 the remainder of the way, and claim a 124-103 blowout victory. This marks the second blowout win for the Thunder this season, and both occurred with the Thunder sporting the sunset orange.
Durant had a 32-point, 11-rebound double-double to go along with Westbrook’s 23-point, 13-assist double-double. Ibaka added 10 points, while Kanter (21 points) and Waiters (19 points) provided a tremendous spark from off of the bench.
The Suns had some good performances as well. Eric Bledsoe’s 28-point, 11-assist double-double is nothing to scoff at. Markieff Morris added 19 points, while Brandon Knight finished with 14. T.J. Warren provided 17 points from off of the bench.
For the remainder of this week, the Thunder travel to D.C. to take on the Wizards Tuesday night, then return to OKC to host the 76ers Friday night. Keep checking in with Thunderous Intentions throughout the week, and I hope to see you back here next week.
