The NBA MVP and now the Male Athlete of the Year at the ESPYs. Russell Westbrook truly is the man of the people.
Life is good for Russell Westbrook. Most importantly, his newborn son Noah is healthy by all indications. On the career side of things he happens to be doing alright as well. First came the MVP in late June, then the Paul George trade acquisition at the dawn of July.
His latest shining moment? Being named the Male Athlete of the Year at the ESPY’s.

Russ got the both the first laugh and the last laugh on the evening. His speech was a quick summary of his MVP acceptance with the same ear-to-ear smile – it was perfect for the occasion.
The award was voted on by fans across the world, showing how much popularity Russ has gained in the past year. In ESPN’s 2016 world’s top 100 famous athletes list, Westbrook finished in 48th place overall. Derrick Rose, Dwight Howard and Damian Lillard all placed above him; Deron Williams was only 39 spots away. Now he’s recognized by the world (but mostly Americans) as the Athlete of the Year.
Westbrook has nearly every individual accolade wrapped up. It’s time to turn his focus to winning championships. Luckily for him and us Thunder fans he’s got Paul George to help him with that. George was introduced to Oklahoma City the same time Russ was at the ESPY’s; there’s something magical about that, I’m just not sure what.
Congratulations to Russ for the award. We’re proud of you.
