OKC Thunder: One year later, Patrick Patterson is ready to claim x-factor role
Strengths
Defense:
Despite possessing average athleticism, 2-Pat is an exceptional defender. His high defensive IQ guides his ability to switch and guard positions one through five.
In OKC’s triple overtime win over the Philadelphia 76ers last season, Patterson does a terrific job switching onto J.J Redick. The sharpshooter rolls off a Joel Embiid screen and 2-Pat makes a great read to block his game winning 3-point attempt.
3-point shooting
2-Pat is a solid 3-point shooter and was one of Oklahoma City’s biggest threats from range. He is a terrific spot-up shooter and when given the room to fire in catch and shoot situations, can make defenses pay if they elect to sag.
While Patterson can hit from anywhere beyond the arc, he is most effective on corner three’s (39 percent).
2-Pat also shot a solid 38.1 percent from above the break.
Weakness
Offense off the dribble:
Not the most fluid athlete or possessing the handles to create space, 2-Pat is awkward driving to the hoop. The veteran finds life tough when he’s expected to drive to the hole and his shots look like Hail Mary’s rather than solid offensive moves.
Even though Patterson retrieves the offensive rebound and puts the ball back in the bucket, he is uncomfortable making plays on the bounce.
Rebounding
Possessing average athleticism causes 2-Pat problems rebounding the ball. The veteran must rely on timing and positioning to beat players on the boards. Against more athletic players, he is often beaten to 50-50 balls giving up second chance opportunities.
