Lightning Report: Analyzing why the OKC Thunder offense is exploding

Does this matter?

The Western Conference, though deeper than it’s ever been, is still pretty wide open near the top. The Denver Nuggets have been hurt all year which has covered up for their declining defense while the Portland Trailblazers are a Damian Lillard or C.J McCollum injury away from dropping down to the bubble, and everyone else is deeply flawed. It’s possible that with a revamped offense powered by legitimate weapons past the big three, this team can make their way to the Conference Finals.

For the Thunder, that’s a huge win. They were one of the most disappointing teams in the league

last year and after preseason projections that OKC would be more of the same this season, they’ve found a way to get better across the board. That kind of improvement is absolutely vital to a franchise and is almost certainly going to sustain well into the future.

The true drivers behind this offensive improvement are younger guys like Jerami Grant, Dennis Schroder, and Terrance Ferguson; all of whom are under team control for the next few years and will conintue to improve.

With Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and DeMarcus Cousins all about to hit free agency, Golden State’s dominance over the NBA could come to an end for the first time since 2015-2016.

If that is the case, the OKC Thunder are well-positioned to make a potential Finals run and keep their window open for longer than anyone could have expected.
