OKC Thunder vs. Utah Jazz, 2019-20 team preview
Point guard upgrade:
For every quality Rubio offered, Conley is an upgraded version. Skilled on both sides of the floor Conley is capable of shooting efficiently to range and equally adept at driving either to score or create for his court mates. His presence immediately forces opposing defenses to have to guard him and he can also take the more difficult defensive cover.
Although Memphis played with the slowest pace in the association one of Conley’s best attributes is his ability to dictate and control pace.
Mitchell showcased growth in his sophomore season, however, partnered with Conley the weight of having to shoulder the majority of the offense is reduced. It’s also arguably the strongest backcourt partner Conley has ever had. The resulting effect could be both guards experiencing career bests.
Perimeter options:
The Jazz ranked 10th for perimeter efficiency and ninth in attempts and makes. The problem was in the postseason when the pace slowed, opponents isolated on the few quality 3-point shooters. Because Rubio was ineffective from range teams could play off him forcing him to shoot and cut off his passing lanes.
Factor in Bogdanovic to the mix and suddenly every capable 3-point shooter increases their shooting opportunities. To reiterate, because opponents played off Rubio, it reduced Mitchell’s effectiveness forcing him to be the primary scorer and playmaker. That won’t be the case with Conley.
Couple that with two additional 3-point shooters and distributors and it opens up the offense. Opponents won’t be able to camp out on Ingles nor will they be able to automatically preordain the ball recipient.
