NBA Trade Deadline Roundup – Dissecting Southwest Division Deals
Dallas Mavericks:
Trades/Moves:
Dallas Mavericks receive:
F – Nerlens Noel: 8.9 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 1.0 APG, 61.1 FG%, 68.3 FT%, 0.9 BlkPG, 1.4 Stl PG
Philadelphia 76ers receive:
- C – Andrew Bogut (who is expected to be released)
- F- Justin Anderson
- Top -18 protected first-round draft pick
Deron Williams waived: As the Mavericks move into full-on tank mode they waived Williams. Dallas will now pass the point guard duties on to youngster Yogi Ferrell who is the D-League Cinderella story of the year.
As a side note, I’ll obviously have plenty of angst to share in Swag and Shade if Williams and Bogut end up in Cleveland, but that’s an opinion for another day. Other parties were said to be interested in Williams such as his former team (the Utah Jazz). But apparently the (cough) King gets what the (cough) King wants. Just out of curiosity, if this does happen (Bogut/Williams to Cleveland) I wonder how much older the average age of the( already oldest NBA team) will be.
The Fit:
With this move, the Dallas Mavericks have shown their intentions on conceding this season with a look to clear cap space and prepare for the draft and free agency. Philly shopped Noel for a long time without many bites. Much of this was due to Noel’s injury history and a penchant for bad behavior off the court.

Rick Carlisle doesn’t suffer fools (ask Rajon Rondo), so this feels like a good fit for Noel who’ll benefit from Carlisle’s ability to get the best out of his players. In addition, playing Noel beside Dirk will offer Nowitzki the ability to not worry about having to do as much dirty work in the defensive paint.
How this trade affects the OKC Thunder:
It doesn’t.
Final Grade: B-
Hard to know how this move turns out until next season when the Mavericks have a full roster.
