Well he has finally done it. Russell Westbrook has broken the 2,000 point barrier in a season.
It has taken nine seasons, but Russell Westbrook has finally broken the 2,000 point barrier. He has been threatening to break it for a number of seasons. However, the closest he had previously been was the 2012-13 season where he scored 1,903 points in 82 games.
In the 2014-15 season when Westbrook had to take over the scoring duties due to the infamous Kevin Durant foot injury, he scored 1,886 points in 67 games. This was a league leading average of 28.1 points per game.
The Moment
For those of you who follow milestone statistics as closely as I do, you should know Westbrook joins a list of 94 other players. There have been more than 4,000 players who have set foot on an NBA court; this equates to just over two percent of all players.
Westbrook hit the milestone on a first quarter free throw.
If Westbrook keeps going at his current pace he is on track to score 2,629 points for the season. If he maintains this rate then this will be the 18th best individual season total of all time. As you’d expect there the names ahead of Westbrook are notable. Wilt Chamberlain leads the grouping with six season totals higher than this number.
Michael Jordan has four seasons above Westbrook’s projected points tally. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar only has only one above the projected total. If he continues at this pace he will beat Kevin Durant’s Thunder single-season record of 2,593 points in a season.
