It took 77 games for Russell Westbrook to tie Oscar Robertson’s single season triple-double record.
I expected a greater response to Russell Westbrook equaling Oscar Robertson’s single season triple-double record. Only Wilt Chamberlain (1967-68) came close with 31 triple -doubles. And, if it weren’t for Westbrook this season odds are James Harden would have made ‘The Big O’ topical again.
In reality, Westbrook’s current hot streak began March 9th. Since then Westbrook has registered 10 triple-doubles in 12 games. From that date forward everyone in and out of the sport anticipated this result. Likewise, many are expecting Westbrook to break Robertson’s record. He’ll have 5 more games to do it, and if (scratch that) when that happens expect an out pouring of congratulations to hit social media en masse.
For now, let’s revisit the interviews, quotes and messages punctuating Russell Westbrook’s historic night.
NBA Game Time:
In studio at NBA TV, Isiah Thomas and Kevin McHale spoke about Westbrook’s record tying triple-double. These two legends of the game spoke of just how incredulous Westbrook’s accomplishment is.
Interviews:
Russell’s spoke to the assembled media throng post game (video as per Fred Katz Twitter feed):
Westbrook’s post game walk away interview was punctuated by the crowd serenading him with MVP chants and his teammates enjoying in the moment.

Making History on Home Court:
It’s likely Westbrook will break the record on the road. So it was fitting he tied Robertson in front of his home town fan base. There was a group of fans in the crowd who kept track of his stats on big boards. Based on the crowd reaction when “the moment” happened it was clear everyone was keeping track. At the precise moment the Peake was aware and exploded. After during the first stoppage in play, the in house announcer addressed the crowd and it was recognized on the big video board overhead. Again, the fans exploded with chants of MVP.

The easy win offers benefits for the Thunder as Westbrook and the starters were able to rest the entire fourth quarter. Conversely their opponent (the Grizzlies) played an overtime game in San Antonio and could be without several players tonight. Jeremy Lambert has the game preview for your perusal.
