An open letter to Russell Westbrook, Thank You
By Sean Reece
Impact
You will be the pioneer for Oklahoma City Thunder basketball for generations to come. You’ll break records, like you did this season, but those will be forgotten or potentially broken eventually.
Putting hope in pride in a state is bigger than basketball. That is what you will be remembered for, Russ.
I felt a dark cloud over my life last summer, but you changed that for me. Basketball has always been my favorite sport and the only sport I played. It has always held a special place in my life.
More from Thunderous Intentions
- Stealing one player from every Southwest Division team for the OKC Thunder
- Should the OKC Thunder chase after a disgruntled hometown hero?
- 3 OKC Thunder players who can step up in Aleksej Pokusevski’s absence
- Aleksej Pokusevski sidelined approximately 6 weeks with ankle injury
- Damian Lillard does not fit with the OKC Thunder
It would be hard to imagine watching basketball without you in it. You have inspired me in not only my life but other lives as well.
You have inspired me to chase my dreams. I know not everything will be sweet roses and hugs and kisses. Russell, you have shown that since last summer. Life isn’t always easy, but you have shown that even in the toughest of times, a flicker of light shines through.
Sure, we may not win a championship this year, but that doesn’t really matter. Like Kanter said he thinks the team is in a good spot.
The Thunder may not have all the stars or banners hanging, but they have you, Russell Westbrook.
As the great Kobe Bryant said,
"“Heroes come and go, but legends are forever.”"
But, I think you are more than that. You are both a hero and a legend. You are a hero for OKC Thunder fans and you will be one of the best legends in NBA history once it all is said and done.
Lastly, I just want to say thank you, Russ. Thank you for being our MVP. Thank you for being our hero. And thank you for making us recognize the infinite possibilities when you simply say –Why Not.
