Hopefully the OKC Thunder take this as a sign that the social media department needs to make a change.

BREAKING NEWS: The Oklahoma City Thunder Twitter account has officially been deemed the worst Twitter account of the 30 NBA franchises.

For Thunder fans this isn’t necessarily breaking news. It’s more of a confirmation of something we’ve known for a few years. The Thunder Twitter account is less fun than the

No Fun

National Football League. The Thunder Twitter account is less fun than a college graduation ceremony. It’s more boring than a three hour flight delay when you forget to bring a carry on.

In fact, the Thunder don’t have any job title on their staff directory website with the phrase “social media” or “new media” or even “digital media.” The Atlanta Hawks have three of those people. The Philadelphia 76ers have a whole department, a total of nine people, dedicated to digital media. This should be the signal that it’s time to make a change.

I’m not even from Oklahoma but I am sick and tired of hearing national media members talk about how blase Oklahoma City is. The absolute atrocity that is the Thunder Twitter account doesn’t help.

Social media – and Twitter especially – is the perfect place to change the way people look at your organization outside of basketball. It’s a way to give your franchise an edge, something that is increasingly more important in today’s day and age of sports fandom. With Russell Westbrook’s historical season OKC had an opportunity to build a beautiful brand on the online world; instead we got a retweet about a Linkin Park and Machine Gun Kelly concert.

The Thunder Twitter account is depressing. And I’m not exaggerating. Jeremy Lambert, Thunderous Intentions’ resident optimist, wrote about how tragic the Thunder Twitter account earlier in the season.

Finally, the wonderful people of OKC Thunder Twitter don’t deserve this. Although I’ve had my complaints, I truly do enjoy the entertainment that comes from those folks. It’d be nice if they could get a little effort from the team they so passionately root for.
