Russell Westbrook will be crowned MVP tonight and next week we’ll throw a party.

Tonight, Russell Westbrook will most likely win the NBA MVP award.

The last time a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder won the NBA MVP award, he gave one of the most memorable MVP speeches ever.

“The Real MVP” turned into a social media meme that continues to do this day. And tonight, for Thunder fans, it dies.

Realistically, it should have died last year on July 4, but I can understand needing a year to get it out of your system. If you gave up on the phrase last year, you’re a credit to the community. You’re the real Russell Westbrook. However, if you continued to use the phrase, get it all out of your system now. Because, when Westbrook his handed the MVP award, the phrase “Real MVP” should no longer be uttered by a Thunder fan.

There is no more “Real MVP” for us. There’s just Westbrook.

It’s highly unlikely that Westbrook delivers a meme-worthy moment. We all know Russ is as petty as they come, but taking a shot at Durant during a moment that is supposed to be about you doesn’t seem like Russ. Maybe, he’ll thank Durant for leaving. Or he’ll thank his teammates that stuck around. Anything more would be unexpected.

The biggest issue is that this is an awards show and not a press conference. Chances are, they’ll play Westbrook off after 3 minutes and he won’t be able to do much more than thank everyone. I hope Westbrook is allowed as much time as he wants, he’ll probably ignore the cue anyway, but it’s a bit criminal that he has to accept the trophy at a self-congratulatory award show rather than the typical intimate press conference.

More from Thunderous Intentions

Luckily, Westbrook will get his day.

*Puts on Optimistic Hat*

Next week, on July 4, Westbrook will sign the triple-double contract that keeps him in Oklahoma City for the next decade. Days later, Oklahoma City will throw the biggest party ever. It’ll put the Cleveland parade to shame. Westbrook will show up wearing snakeskin everything, including a backpack. The event will be catered by Gigi’s Cupcakes. They’ll even put little rings on top to symbolize how easy it is. “LOYALTY.” by Kendrick Lamar will be on repeat.

That’s when Russell Westbrook will give his real MVP speech. He’ll talk about the moments that defined his season. He’ll thank every single teammate by name and tell them why he loves them. Steven Adams and Enes Kanter will cry. Westbrook will thank everyone in the organization before thanking his family.

And he’ll end the speech by saying, “Oklahoma City. You the only MVP.”
