OKC Thunder 2017 free agents point guard shortlist
Patty Mills:
Over the course of Patty Mills’ 6-year tenure with the Spurs, he’s primarily functioned as the backup point guard. Despite his reserve role, however, he’s also capably stepped in as to cover for Tony Parker.
More impressively, sensing he could improve his standing on the Spurs a few seasons ago he committed to an offseason slim down and aggressive gym routine to improve his perimeter shooting. He was successful in both endeavors. Once Cory Joseph was moved to make room for LaMarcus Aldridge he cemented his backup spot.
Furthermore, Mills has produced in every situation. This season his stat line read 9.5 points, 1.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists (career-high), and 0.8 steals. His shooting efficiency was stellar — 44 percent from the field, 82.5 from the charity stripe, and a robust 41.4 from the perimeter. The latter came on a career-high 4.4 attempts per game.
Furthermore, Mills is a quality guy who would be a delight to have in the locker room. Forget the fact he brings the Spurs mentality and winning history, and remember he was the guy who displayed how to encourage teammates while on the bench in his DNP days.
Most importantly he checks off a number of boxes and would come presumably at a reasonable rate given his assets.
