Thunder in the news is your one-stop shop for daily OKC Thunder content. Today we break down Paul George and his new team.
We are on the eve of Russell Westbrook day in Oklahoma City – August 4th – so it’s only natural we discuss Russ’ new superstar teammate. How will the offense work after Westbrook had such a high usage the season before? Is PG the perfect compliment for Russ? Let’s find out.
What the offense should look like
Rob Mahoney from Sports Illustrated is one of the most underrated basketball minds in the business. In his newest piece Mahoney dives into the stylistic differences between PG and Kevin Durant; he sees George as the “ideal collaborator” for Russ. The only thing keeping them from becoming one of the most dominant duos in the league, however, is Westbrook himself.
"The goal isn’t to stop Westbrook from being a high-usage creator, but merely to remove the need for him to be a historically high-usage one."
The Thunder are Russell Westbrook’s team
We’ll keep the family close for this one. Albert Dadson from Hoops Habit hypothesizes why this duo could work better than Russ and KD. Think about it. All along the problem was that they couldn’t figure out whose team it was – there was no spiritual rhythm per say. Now George walks into a situation where he would be asinine to challenge Russ for the Top Dawg spot.
"George has not been to an NBA Finals; Westbrook has been to one. George has no MVP Award; Westbrook does. Both players have been able to lead their team to the playoffs, but Westbrook wins in terms of reputation."
Nobody knows what Russell Westbrook will do
Okay I told a little fib. Of course we have to cover Russell Westbrook on the eve of Russell Westbrook day. Josh Lea from Thunderous Intentions (this man has been on fire recently) quickly covers the uncertainty in Oklahoma City.
"With tomorrow being August 4th, Thunder fans will continue to keep their eyes on Twitter and wait for any news about Westbrooks contract. As of now, Westbrook is in OKC on the eve of his day. So, we wait."
Hopefully Westbrook is plotting something spectacular tomorrow. Check back with Thunderous Intentions tomorrow for any breaking news.
