Russell Westbrook’s contract drama continues
By Joshua Lea
For the OKC Thunder, it appears that 99% of their offseason moves are complete. However, there still remains one more thing that needs to be taken care of.
The Oklahoma City Thunder would much rather begin the 2017-18 season with Russell Westbrook locked into a supermax deal. This would allow the MVP to remain in Oklahoma City for the next five seasons. However, that has yet to be seen. If you recall last year, on August 4th, Westbrook signed his first contract extension to remain apart of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The city celebrated, the Thunder hosted a major event at Chesapeake Energy Arena. The Mayor of Oklahoma City Mick Cornett declared August 4th Russell Westbrook Day. Now, with today being the eve of August 4th, there are still doubts about Westbrook signing a contract.
Brett Dawson of the Oklahoman wrote yesterday that Westbrook is in OKC but not expected to sign a contract at this time. This, of course, is according to the sources that spoke to him. However, if you frequent Thunderous Intentions you might have read an article by Jeremy Lambert who suggests that Westbrook is going to sign an extension based on social media hints.

Now I have the utmost respect for both Brett Dawson and Jeremy Lambert as writers. I believe they both are excellent at gathering the evidence as they see and running with what they have. Still, I like a lot of Thunder fans, believe that Westbrook isn’t going anywhere. One thing about Westbrook is he keeps his cards extremely close to his chest. We all know where he learned that. I’m looking at you, Sam Presti.
The fact of the matter is we really don’t know for sure what Russell Westbrook will do. While Jeremy Lambert did some great investigative puzzle piecing, we can only hope his theory is correct. Lately, the NBA has just as much drama as the current President. However, once Westbrook signs the contract extension, the drama of the Oklahoma City Thunder will fade until October.
With tomorrow being August 4th, Thunder fans will continue to keep their eyes on Twitter and wait for any news about Westbrooks contract. As of now, Westbrook is in OKC on the eve of his day. So, we wait.
