The NBA schedule is going to be released within the month. Austin Sternlicht takes a look at some ideal matchups for OKC Thunder on arguably the most exciting day of the regular season.

For the past seven seasons, the OKC Thunder have been fortunate enough to be featured on Christmas. Primetime matchups on Christmas day have become an NBA tradition, equivalent to the NFL on Thanksgiving, or college football on New Year’s day. With Russell Westbrook still in an OKC Thunder uniform, and the addition of Paul George, it is safe to assume the Thunder will be back again on this special day. But, who should the Thunder be matched up against this year? This piece takes a look at the top five most interesting matchups that OKC could have.

One notable emission from this list is the Golden State Warriors. First of all, there is a high chance  the defending champs will once again square off against the Cleveland Cavaliers. These two teams have met each of the past two Christmases. It only makes sense for a third round. In addition, it wouldn’t be fun if the Warriors, who are still a notch ahead of the Thunder (and basically everyone else) obliterated OKC on Christmas, especially with the game most likely in Oracle.

There also won’t be any east teams on this list. With Cleveland, the East’s only true contender, most likely playing Golden State, there are no East teams deserving to play the OKC Thunder. One could make an argument for Boston, but I would much rather see them play the Wizards in a rematch of the most competitive playoff series from last season.

This list is based on any history between the teams, along with the potential for a fun, competitive matchup. Let’s get started.
