Top Two – no dispute:

LeBron James:

For the fifth straight season the King sits atop this list. It could possibly be argued LeBron James may no longer be the League’s best player. But, seven straight final’s trips and improvement by virtually every player he shares the court with speak to his dominance.

The oxymoron nature of LeBron is he’s not the typical NBA figurehead. Previous faces of the league were more score first players like Jordan, Bryant and Dr. J.  James is someone I liken more akin to the NHL’s Wayne Gretzky. Like ‘the Great One’ his playmaking ability and floor vision are unparalleled.

Still, at almost 33 years old James may have reached the apex of his prime. The NBA has become a far more athletic game with youngsters taking center stage. And, while no one would discount the King’s position atop the league, multi faceted younger players like the Greek Freak and yes, Russell Westbrook may eventually usurp his spot atop the hill.

Kevin Durant:

Oh the angst. Every time Thunder fans have to see rankings and list like the Crossover’s top 100 players inevitably there will be a gut punch feeling. Hard to deny the original unicorn his rightful spot on the list, particularly after his first title and performance in said championship. Durant remains one lengthy handful who handles the ball like a guard, runs like a gazelle and upped his defensive game last season.

This is also the fifth season Durant ranks second behind James. The question is will Durant be the man to usurp James on this annual list. Or will that inevitable shift fall to another younger individual?
