Russell Westbrook, Thunder agree to supermax extension
By Tony Heim
Russell Westbrook did it. The 2016-2017 NBA MVP re-committed to the OKC Thunder long-term, signing a supermax extension making him the highest paid player in the NBA.
After much anticipation – a commercial proclaiming Oklahoma City “home,” rumors that the Paul George acquisition solidified his belief in Sam Presti and rumors that the trade would push his decision back a summer – Russell Westbrook has agreed to a five year extension to remain with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
More from Woj’s story:
"The deal starts with the 2018-19 season, and delivers Westbrook the biggest guaranteed contract in NBA history — six seasons and $233 million through 2022-23."
We believe Westbrook received the now-famous Designated Veteran extension, a offer that pays a singular player 35% of the cap. The supermax makes Westbrook the highest paid player in NBA history, while also netting him the most money per season of any U.S athlete. He deserves every penny of it.
Russ has been the unequivocal face of the Thunder since July 4th, 2016. This move solidifies him as the face of the Thunder for the next 10+ years. Indiana Pacers fans still worship Reggie Miller; now Oklahoma City has their own superstar who isn’t afraid to risk their entire career to bring a championship to one fanbase.

- Damian Lillard does not fit with the OKC Thunder
The move is also a signal to Paul George and Carmelo Anthony. Oklahoma City is where Westbrook wants to play professional basketball, not Los Angeles. By taking this step it shows George that Russ has faith in the organization whether or not PG stays. And it almost guarantees Carmelo picks up his player option for next season. Unless George has a promise from another superstar to join him in LA, Oklahoma City may be the most appealing situation for him now.
That’s besides the point though. Russell Westbrook is locked up with the Oklahoma City Thunder through the 2022-2023 season. Maintaining relevance will not be an issue for this team, just like it hasn’t for the last nine seasons. Oklahoma City may be an unattractive small market for some players; this proves they are a top-rate organization for those solely focused on the game.
Thank you Russ. Keep repping OKC and Thunder Nation as long as you want. We got your back forever.
