Russell Westbrook will get his first minutes on court this preseason in a start versus New Orleans Pelicans.
Since the signing of Paul George and Carmelo Anthony OKC Thunder fans have been salivating to see the two new stars on court with Russell Westbrook. That wish will come true tonight.
Thunderous Intentions hinted at this idea in our game day preview this morning, and sure enough it’s become fact. Russell Westbrook is starting in the preseason opener at Chesapeake.
As we’ve said all preseason, don’t get too high or too low based on what occurs in preseason. Because that is precisely what preseason games are for. To iron out kinks, smooth transition into systems, integrate new players and isolate who’ll fill out open roster spots.

- Should the OKC Thunder chase after a disgruntled hometown hero?
- 3 OKC Thunder players who can step up in Aleksej Pokusevski’s absence

- Damian Lillard does not fit with the OKC Thunder
Still with the National narrative being focused on their being no way the new OKC Thunder Big 3 can coexist this game should hopefully offer a glimpse of the relevance of that statement. Certainly the ebb and flow between the trio is going to take time. But if there are even moments like Anthony’s 19 points in 19 minutes or the apparent chemistry already existing between Melo and George maybe that will quieten the critics.
You can bet Russell Westbrook has heard all the disparaging comments. He’s used to this type of rhetoric and he’s used to proving those same critics wrong.
As per Donovan Westbrook will be on a minutes restriction, likely only to play the first quarter. So, don’t be too worried if the trio press, cough up the ball a ton or don’t find their immediate flow. This is a project which will take time. And, tonight is just the first step of that journey.
