OKC Thunder in the news for Friday October 13 finds the GOAT, Michael Jordan chiding super teams, OK3 narrative reaching far outside local market and an open letter to Thunder Nation.

Welcome to the weekend and with that OKC Thunder in the news serves up topical stories about your favorite team and players. Preseason may be over for the OKC Thunder, but 24 teams are in action tonight as preseason ends. The regular season tips off Tuesday October 17 and the Thunder start their regular season net Thursday against the Knicks.

With that let’s dive into the news for Friday, October 13.

The GOAT isn’t a fan of super teams:

Michael Jordan isn’t a fan of super teams. MJ never took the road to lure other super stars to Chicago nor did he abandon the Bulls to form a super team elsewhere. So, MJ’s comments about super teams isn’t that surprising. What his comment s in Cigar Aficionado allude to are bordering on shade toward’s this era’s GOAT. At least that could be the perception. Bleacher Report scribe Timothy Rapp opines what Jordan may be trying to say as he digs into MJ’s interview.

"“I think it’s going to hurt the overall aspect of the league from a competitive standpoint,” he said (h/t Ben Golliver of SI.com). “You’re going to have one or two teams that are going to be great, and another 28 teams that are going to be garbage. Or they’re going to have a tough time surviving in the business environment.”"

Rapp goes on to ponder which second team Jordan is referring to other than the obvious Golden State Warriors. One might presume he mean his favorite player Russell Westbrook’s Thunder, but it’s more likely this missive is directed at his counterpart of this era LeBron James.

"As for Jordan’s comments about 28 teams being garbage this season, it’s unclear which two teams he believes will be great.More than likely, one of those teams is the defending champion Golden State Warriors. Is the second team LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers? A Boston Celtics team with a fascinating young core led by Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward? The Houston Rockets, led by Chris Paul, James Harden and one of the league’s most dangerous offenses? The trio of Russell Westbrook, Paul George and Carmelo Anthony in Oklahoma City? The always dangerous San Antonio Spurs behind Kawhi Leonard and head coach Gregg Popovich?"

OK3 big news outside Oklahoma City:

More from Thunderous Intentions

While the OKC Thunder fans are excited for this season to begin and how their new trio of super stars will perform other markets are just as curious.  The OK3 are big news and because of it they are even making the sports pages in cities like Boston who arguably have their own big three of Kyrie Irving, Gordon Hayward and Al Horford. The Boston Herald featured an Associated Press article  “Oklahoma City’s Big Three shooting for their 1st NBA Title”.

Carmelo Anthony, Paul George and Russell Westbrook are all featured with the article discussing their mutual desire to win a title and how that goal takes precedence over everything else. The quotes by the OK3 have all been featured in this column previously. Perhaps the most interesting quote in the article comes from GM Sam Presti. Notably the Magician GM points to how he expects scribes to jump on any early chemistry issues:

"Thunder general manager Sam Presti said the team might not immediately click.“I can write the stories for all of you the first time that we look sloppy or we drop a game here or there or we’re working things through, you know,” he said. “That’s natural, and I wouldn’t say you guys shouldn’t react that way. But the vision for our team and the way we’ve gone about our business is to always see things for what they can be and not for what they are, and I think we’ll know what we can be after 82 games.”"

Open letter to OKC Thunder fans:

In case you missed it, TI scribe Austin Sternlicht penned an open letter to Thunder Nation imploring them to enjoy this season  – no matter what.

"So every time Roberson air balls a free throw or Melo shows no interest on defense, just think back to how painful the playoffs were last year watching Westbrook run out of gas trying to do everything by himself. Make no mistake, the OKC Thunder are title contenders this season. Not many teams can say that. When this team learns to play together, it will be like poetry in motion."
