Spyropoulos offers his take on James Harden’s MVP potential:

I think it’s too early to call this Harden’s MVP season, simply because as you mentioned, there is a lot that can change between now and April. I have Harden as the MVP at this moment, but if the Rockets slip later in the season and can’t win over 60 games, while LeBron continues to put up these crazy numbers and leads the Cavs to 55+ wins, then I think it would be very likely that LeBron wins MVP.

I believe voters want to vote for James because he has several narratives going for him (he’s 33, Kyrie left the Cavs, he is posting several career-highs, and he’s regarded as the best player in the world but hasn’t won an MVP since 2013). However, for Harden to win the MVP, I believe he has to continue averaging similar numbers and the Rockets have to win over 60 games.

If Paul misses more time and Houston can still get to 60 wins, that will be a big boost for Harden’s MVP case. Now, as for the rumors, it’s clear Harden wants to win MVP. But, every great player should be driven to win the award, especially if they haven’t in their careers. It’s just important that Harden and the Rockets realize that playing for MVP shouldn’t prevent him from resting down the stretch of the regular season.
