Russell Westbrook wins Western Conference Player of the Week

A hot streak from the OKC Thunder helped Russell Westbrook win his second Western Conference Player of the Week of the season.
The Oklahoma City Thunder’s hot streak continued even through the off day, this time celebrating their superstar. Earlier this afternoon the NBA announced Russell Westbrook as their Western Conference Player of the Week. The announcement comes only a day after Russ’ incredible 37 points-13 rebounds-14 assists statline against the Eastern Conference’s best team, the Toronto Raptors.
Oklahoma City is currently rolling, a large part due to the reigning League MVP’s play. The OKC Thunder have won six straight games; Westbrook has recorded five straight triple-doubles. He took more than 20 shots only once this past week, instead focusing on the distribution aspect of the point guard position. That resulted in at least 11 assists the last 4 games and a team average of 119.5 points per game.
There’s a new challenge for the Thunder (and Westbrook) now – maintain this level of play. Oklahoma City is in a tight Playoff race, with their next nine matchups all against Playoff contenders. They desperately need Westbrook to continue controlling contests in all facets because his energy sets the tone for the other 14 players on the roster. That’s easier said than done though.
OKC has been inconsistent all season. The hope is that they’re finally bearing down as they hit the final 1/8 of the season. This week includes a visit to Boston and home games against the Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers. Three more wins and another week of standout performances could garner Russ a third Player of the Week honor this season.

LeBron James joined Russell Westbrook as the recipient of the Eastern Conference’s award. LeBron had a fine week himself, averaging 32 points-13 rebounds-9.7 assists en route to a 2-1 record. Those numbers are similar to Russ’ 25.5 points-12 assists-11.3 rebounds, but that 4-0 record ultimately gives our superstar the edge.
