Although the problems the OKC Thunder faced were somewhat understandable, losing in the first round after a rough season puts head coach Billy Donovan on the hot seat.

While it was expected the new group would need some time to gel together, many people thought the Thunder would hit their stride in time for the playoffs. However, the experiment failed and OKC was eliminated in the first round after nearly missing the playoffs altogether.

Much of the blame is being thrown on Russell Westbrook in the national media, but after an underwhelming season with a talent-laden roster, Donovan is no doubt on the chopping block.

In all fairness, Donovan has faced adversity since taking the head coaching position in 2015. He had one full season of Westbrook and Kevin Durant together before blowing a 3-1 lead to the Warriors in the Western Conference Finals.

Of course, Durant ended up joining the Golden State Warriors that off season, leaving Westbrook as the lone superstar in Oklahoma City. Westbrook willed the Thunder to a playoff berth the last season, but had little to no chance of winning the finals. And finally, Donovan was given the difficult task this campaign of helping three superstars gel together while managing a top-heavy team.

Despite the challenges he faced, many coaches have been fired for much less. Losing in the first round with the talent given and home-court advantage is unacceptable. Will GM Sam Presti cut him some slack? It’s hard to tell. A lot might depend on what Paul George decides to do. Regardless, we can safely assume his job is at least in jeopardy.

With that said, here’s a few potential candidates to consider to be on the sideline next season.

Disclaimer: No rumors have been swirling around as of yet. This is entirely speculation based on the potential of Donovan being fired.
