NBA Draft for OKC Thunder use picks to select Devon Hall, Kevin Hervey

At the 2018 NBA Draft the OKC Thunder selected Devon Hall and Kevin Hervey, two upperclassmen late in the second round

At approximately 10:45 central standard time, more than three hours after the draft started, the Thunder selected Virginia wing Devon Hall with the 53rd overall pick.

Ten minutes later, they selected UT-Arlington’s Kevin Hervey at pick 57.

Hall is a very anti-Thunder pick. He’s already 23, and lacks elite athleticism. The Virginia Beach native is also not super long standing just 6’6 with a 6’7.75 wingspan. But being an atypical Thunder pick isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s hard to find guys this late in the draft that can contribute.  As a four year college player, Hall will need little, if any time to adjust to the NBA game.

The Thunder desperately need “three and d” players and Hall might be able to fit the bill. He’s an excellent spot-up three-point shooter, hitting 132 triples last season at a 43 percent clip. A versatile defender, Hall helped the Cavaliers hold opponents to just 54 points a game last season, the best mark in all of Division One college basketball.

Hervey is a bit more of a Thunder pick. The 22-year-old wing is 6’7 with a 7’3.5 wingspan. He averaged 20.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for the Mavericks last season. The big concern with Hervey is he has torn both of his ACL’s.

There is no indication about whether the Thunder will keep both picks. But assuming they are, Hall and Hervery should be on the Thunder’s summer league team this season. As to whether or not they make the opening-night roster, much of that depends on what happens with Paul George. If PG13 stays, both prospects could see much time with the Blue this season. Should George leave, it could mean one, or both will be suiting up for the Thunder.

UPDATE: The Thunder have acquired the 45th overall pick Hamidou Diallo from the Charlotte Hornets. The deal can’t be completed until July 6th. It is unclear if the Thunder are trading Hall and/or Hervey to complete this trade. More information will come as TI learns of the specifics.
