Free Agency – Offseason Mandate:

With LeBron James opting out the assumption is that the Lakers took a stronghold on landing him. The 76ers are in the mix however given the cap space they have available, not to mention two emerging superstars. At issue is whether his game works well with   Simmons though as they are extremely similar players in style.

Pointing out the obvious, much of the 76ers success came via the marriage between the youngsters and veterans. Yet almost every single vet is on the NBA Free Agency block.  If Philly can’t land LeBron, don’t get Paul George and are antsy to risk giving up youngsters on a one-year tryout for Kawhi then how will this summer be graded?

Moreover, can they be as successful if J.J. Redick, Ersan Ilyasova, and Marco Belinelli don’t return?  Even Amir Johnson who doesn’t put up big numbers was a huge factor off the court for the young squad.

They’ll also be a hunted team now and not taking anyone by surprise this season. With so many moving parts and copious youngsters, the question is precisely what stage of the process is the 76ers at?

Regardless of whether they land another big name to pair beside Embiid and Simmons, I think the larger more imminent question will be whether they can bring back the vets who helped push them over the top. And, if they can’t, is it as simple as finding new veterans to play those roles?
