Free Agency – Offseason Mandate:

First of all, Sean Marks must be jumping up and down for joy over the Nets finally having ownership of their draft picks back in hand. I don’t anticipate big moves this offseason by Marks.

Rather, he’ll set his sights on next summer when Brooklyn can pony up for two large contracts. Don’t be surprised if DeMarre Carroll who is in his final contract year gets traded, although it’s more likely to come near the trade deadline.

What Marks will need to do this summer is to figure out the glut of guards the Nets employ. Among the many questions:

  • Will Jeremy Lin remain in the mix?
  • Should Marks shop Dinwiddie to grab value in the frontcourt?
  • What happens with D’Angelo Russell?
  • Is Staukas destined to be a journeyman?
  • Can Allen Crabbe discover consistency?
  • And can Caris LeVert continue to ascend?

Clearly, the Nets need to fill in depth up front, but again, don’t expect Marks to be chasing big-time free agents. Instead, like Atlanta, the Hawks will shed the big Dwight Howard contract, reset and look to add more draft picks as they prepare to kick their future process in gear.
