The OKC Thunder has already hit the jackpot this NBA free agency period. But the last cherry on top would be to beef up the bench with a guy like Ty Lawson.

As NBA Free Agency rolls into it’s third full day several big targets are off the board along with some surprising landings by stars. Still, the OKC Thunder can’t be driven off their mission simply because super teams land economically insane deals.

Rather, Sam Presti needs to address specific team needs and for OKC that means addressing depth issues.

Second Chances:

When Ty Lawson was signed by the Washington Wizards just before the signing deadline last season, he came back with a renewed outlook on life. Following a trio of arrests for drunk driving in 2015, the 27-year old point guard began to go downhill. His stats, along with his playing time and confidence all began to descend.

At the conclusion of a forgetful season with Sacramento in 2017, Lawson swallowed his pride and went overseas to play in China. It was there Lawson found his confidence and carried the Shandong Golden Stars to the playoffs, and was signed by the Washington Wizards just hours before his Chinese season had ended.

Specifics:

  • Age: 30
  • Position: Point Guard
  • Height: 5’11
  • Weight: 195
  • Experience: 8-years
  • Type of free agent: Unrestricted
  • Hometown: Washington
  • College: Virginia

After sitting out in game one against the Raptors, Lawson exploded for 14 points in 31 minutes in game two. His breakout performance was enough to earn him over 10 minutes in the remaining five games as the backup point guard to John Wall. This was after averaging 25 points and on 62 percent shooting with six assists per game in China. In other words, Lawson can still ball.
