On behalf of us all—whether Oklahomans by home or heart—this letter is for you, Paul George.  Should you happen to read it… thank you for staying with the OKC Thunder.

Oklahoma City is resilient.

After all, we’ve been through a lot. From the bombing right in the heart of our city to the annual threat of fatal tornadoes, we’re no strangers to setbacks. We’ve rebuilt so many times. And each time, we’ve linked arms, lifted each other up, and become stronger.

Two years ago we were dealt a pretty big blow. And though the event pales in comparison to the storms that have destroyed the lives of our neighbors, it still hurt. I think you know what I’m talking about—after all, it’s basketball-related.

The team we had supported for so many years was suddenly fractured. We lost a player many had dubbed “Oklahoma’s son.” It was a rough summer for Okies.

The following year, Russell Wesbrook helped us rebuild by cementing his loyalty.

Then, you arrived.

Suddenly, things were looking up. But of course, history has shown good things can’t last too long around here, so you can imagine how nervous we were this summer.

The night of June 30, many Oklahomans fearfully drifted off to sleep. And, some (myself included) kept our eyes glued to the news… hopeful, but realistic all the same.

When the news did hit—the news that you’re staying—a collective gasp filled the streets. The Facebook and Twitter feeds of locals exploded with a mixture of jubilation and, honestly, a bit of shock.

And when you said these words during the third and final episode of your ESPN special, I know I’m not the only one who cried:

"“It’s more than just loyalty, it’s about doing what I think is right.”"

So, on behalf of all OKC Thunder fans, I want to say thank you.

Thank for taking a chance on us.

When you were traded here last summer, I know Oklahoma City wasn’t your first choice. We all knew it. But, you didn’t let that affect your drive. You helped take this city to the playoffs and—no matter how disappointing that run may have been—we sure did enjoy meeting Playoff P.

Thank you for allowing us to be your home.

More from Thunderous Intentions

In Oklahoma, there are few things more important than college football, sweet tea, and fishing. One of those things is family. Thank you for connecting to that valuable piece of our culture, and for allowing your family to settle in with ours.

Thank you for not running away.

It’s no secret the OKC Thunder hasn’t brought home a championship. It’s a fact that has scared some players into leaving (and establishing super teams). Thank you for avoiding that temptation. Thank you for seeing potential in this team’s roster.

I’m confident you’re going to help this city win a championship.

Thank you for reinventing the “small market.”

By NBA terms, Oklahoma City is considered a small market. And while I will never quite understand that (because, how is a population of 600,000+ small?), the fact that high caliber players like you and Westbrook have chosen to stick around proves we are valuable.

You may not see it, but your decision to stay has affects more far reaching than the NBA. It sends a signal that OKC is a place worth staying. A place with businesses and restaurants and artists who have something to offer. A city bigger than tornadoes and dust bowls.

A place in the middle of America where superstars choose to live.

PG-13, you had a chance to go anywhere. You could have played with LeBron James. You could have gone back home to Los Angeles.

But, you chose Oklahoma City.

Without hesitation… or making us wait for the news… or even giving other teams the chance… you chose us.

And, we choose to cheer you on every night for as long as we have you.
