NBA Free Agency opened with a bang as big targets quickly came to terms. TI’s tracker offers an up to date status for every team as of July 6th.

For the OKC Thunder fans the NBA Free Agency moratorium began with delirium as Paul George didn’t keep the faithful waiting. In fact, the Thunder’s brain trust didn’t have to wait at all as PG announced at Westbrook’s house party his intentions even before the moratorium officially began.

It was a far cry from what was expected as one after another the big names toppled off the board. When LeBron James last entered NBA free agency his Decision 2.0 kept everyone waiting well into the second week. The result was many big names still hadn’t signed by the time Vegas Summer League tipped off. Decision 3.0 was nothing like that occasion as LeBron, like the other big names announced his intentions within the first 24 hours of the moratorium.

A change in the Kings era:

TI staffers discussed how different things are this time around and have a strong opinion on the matter. When Kyrie Irving asked to be traded out of Cleveland there was a turn about regarding LeBron James. Irving like apparently the other stars of his ilk see the writing on the wall. Playing beside the King may get you seasonal appearances in the big show, but it won’t garner the individual spotlight that playing alongside another superstar would.

In fairness, James is the best in the game. Still, he’s not willing to give up being the alpha dog. Nor will he stop pundits from claiming failure is everyone else but his fault. Nor will he allow another to supersede him in taking credit, and arguably he shouldn’t. Still, at 33 (34 in December) that may be why superstars are reticent to be his 1B or 1C.

One after another the King’s mouth pieces trotted out the players who would want to run to LA to join James and one after another they’ve either signed elsewhere (George, Cousins, Jordan) or they’ve made it clear it’s not their desire to join him (Kawhi Leonard). Newly today there are rumblings Dame Lillard is open to the option, but this could just as easily be a hint drop by the Blazers star to get moving on Portland’s upgrade.

Shift at the top?

This led to some questionable signings by the Lakers as they surround James with mostly gritty non perimeter shooters (JaVale McGee, Lance Stephenson, Rajon Rondo and a somewhat efficient but overpaid Klutch client Kentavious Caldwell Pope). Suffice to say this roster which has pundits and oddsmakers claiming will be the Warriors toughest test has many of us scratching our heads as to why it’s garnering such praise. Yes, it’s LeBron James but aside from Brandon Ingram not one of the others has the potential for star status. And, Ingram will be the guy any team involved in a trade with LA covets.

One and dones:

Another noticeable trend of NBA Free Agency is the one and done contracts. With so few teams having disposable cap space many of the players are electing to sign one year deals. This means the summer of 2019 could be the most exciting free agency in recent memory.

Already there are a plethora of talents who’ll hit that period looking to sign deals such as (count them) four star Warriors – Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Kevin Durant and DeMarcus Cousins. That alone is enough to send creative minds into a tizzy, but add in Kyrie Irving, Jimmy Butler and a slew of the stars who will sign 1 + 1 deals this summer and it’s setting the stage for wild fire next summer.

Up to date tracker:

With Vegas tipping off this afternoon NBA Free Agency may be lacking superstars on the unsigned list but there are still a number of specialists and glue guys available. Expect plenty of whispering in corners and GMs attending games with phones in hand.

The list below highlights where each team sits entering the day. I’ve broken the list into four categories highlighting how the NBA Free Agency has progressed in terms of which players on the internal list re-signed, exited or remain undetermined as well as new players from other teams coming in.

Legend:

  • M equals million
  • +PO equals player option, number in front designates years prior ie: a 3 year deal with a player option on the end would be represented as (2 +PO)
  • +TO equals team option, same examples as per above.
  • UFA  equalsuUnrestricted free agent
  • RFA  equals restricted free agent
  • MLE equals midlevel exception
