NBA Free Agency got a shot in the arm with all 30 teams in Vegas for Summer League. The updated TI tracker reflects all moves up to  July 10th.

Although NBA Free Agency had slowed following a busy opening weekend the pace picked up this past weekend. That was to be expected with all 30 teams in Vegas for the annual NBA Summer League tournament.

With most of the big names off the board, teams shifted to infilling their rosters. The writing team at Thunderous Intentions continues to opine on who best would augment the existing OKC core. In some cases no sooner had TI posted a suggested target then news broke that earmarked player signed with another team. Such is the fun of free agency.

This shift will take precedent for the remainder of the offseason. Additionally, expect trades to be more prominent as teams look to create perfect chemistry or versatility on their rosters.

In terms of moves made throughout the Association, a few will undoubtedly help the OKC Thunder, while others augment their competition. Here’s a look at a few teams whose moves could affect OKC followed by the updated team by team list.

Lakers continue to befuddle:

Although Vegas seems to believe the LeBron James Lakers will be the team to battle Golden State for dominance in the West it’s not an opinion shared here. At least not in terms of the initial moves. Witnessing Julius Randle exit at the same price the Lakers signed Rondo is perplexing. Moreover, with LeBron being the guy who likes to be the ball distributor how precisely does Rondo fit into LA’s plans?

And, what does this mean for Lonzo Ball?

With the initial free agent additions of LeBron James ($35.6M), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope ($12M) , Lance Stephenson ($4.5M) and Rajon Rondo ($9M) it puts the Lakers precariously close to the luxury tax. As per Spotrac these moves leave LA with $382,138 in practical cap space. Granted, the next moves Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka could make likely involve trades (such as Kawhi Leonard), but that would mean losing young assets of which Brandon Ingram will be the most coveted.

Lots of questions  in LA left to be answered, but it sure doesn’t seem like the Lakers should be anointed as the Warriors top opponents. At least not yet.

Rockets losing defensive edge?:

To that end, the Rockets are in a precarious position having lost Trevor Ariza right out of NBA Free Agency gate. The next shoe fell with Luc Mbah a Moute exiting to join that other LA team. That represents two very big contributors to the much improved Rockets defense. Making matters worse, is the current dilemma Houston are in with Clint Capela.

Since there are only a few teams who can come correct for the big man, Daryl Morey rolled the dice with an offer of four years at $60 million. Rumor has it Capela’s camp isn’t amused. And, in fairness he has a point. Morey doled out a four year $160 million max deal to Chris Paul. Granted Paul may well be the more important cog to the Rockets, but presumably the Rockets should recognize Capela is still growing and his ceiling is untapped.

Ultimately, there may not be another team who steps to the plate given the few who have cap space to do so. But, it sure feels like Morey and he Rockets are playing with fire.

As per Spotrac the Rockets are sitting in the negative to the tune of minus $16+ million. However, that total included cap holds for Capela ($7M), Tarik Black ($3.8M), Joe Johnson ($1.54M) and Mbah a Moute ($1.54M).

The Melo factor:

For the OKC Thunder, this entire situation bodes well for them to move up the ladder. Especially considering the Rockets aren’t hiding the fact they want to bring in Carmelo Anthony as soon as he’s free. Like Gideon Lim opines this may be precisely why Sam Presti shouldn’t be too quick to pull the trigger on a buyout or waiver of Melo. Perhaps forcing teams to wait (or seeing if there is a potential trade team) may be the better bet.

The next week could find resolution (or possibly as early as today given the tweet below). But, I’m in Lim’s camp believing Presti shouldn’t just make it easy for teams to sign Melo on a vet’s minimum deal. It may be too much to ask for Presti to hold out until the trade deadline. Yet,  the longer he waits the more likely teams will be open to take on expiring contracts or improve their chances by adding proven shooters.

We’ll have more on this situation shortly. In the interim here’s two articles on locations Sam Presti might be able to broker a trade with.

Tracker Updates Ongoing:

Thunderous Intentions will continue providing frequent updates to the tracker. Expect more movement while all the teams are in Vegas and have open access to one another. As part of this process watch for second round draft pick clarification as teams aren’t cemented to signing those players.

With three rookies to deal with the Thunder will need to make decisions on Devon Hall and Kevin Hervey. I’m not sure of the exact protocol for Hamidou Diallo since he was obtained in a trade. That said, of the three Diallo seems the most likely to be on the bench at season start. The other two players could find themselves with the team’s G-League affiliate, the OKC Blue or potentially parked overseas for development.
