OKC Thunder: Top-five memorable season openers
Number two:
Fast forward a year and it was Russell Westbrook versus the world. He led the team in just about every offensive statistical category en route to becoming the second player to average a triple-double for the season.
Although most people understood OKC wasn’t a true contender, the fan base rallied around Westbrook and the rest of the team. For the first time in several years, there wasn’t a “championship or bust” mentality. It was just all about Westbrook seeking his revenge and carrying the team to the playoffs.
The season began with four consecutive wins, with the first being a 103-97 victory over Philadelphia. Westbrook set the tone for the rest of the year with 32 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists. Enes Kanter and Steven Adams combined for 33 points, while Victor Oladipo and Ersan Ilyasova each had 10 points.
It was never going to be a championship season, but supporting Westbrook and watching him accomplish a historic feat which ended in him winning MVP was some of the most fun I’ve had as a Thunder fan.
