OKC Thunder player grades: failure to execute early costs at the end
Player Grades
If we’re honest, returning from injury tonight was likely a strategic move for Russ to shake off the rust of missing six games and being off the court for two weeks (he injured the ankle on November 5 versus the Pelicans). It allows him to be better prepared for a game in Oakland that no matter what anyone tells you will always have a special priority for him.
In addition, having two different starters couldn’t help but throw off timing and flow somewhat. Having said that, I’m not sure the game plan dictated Russ taking five 3-pointers in the opening half. He was one of six until he got riled up by no calls and finished hitting three of his last four perimeter shots.
On the night, he amassed 29 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and was one of two (Diallo) starters who finished with a positive box score (+4).
Certainly, there will be those who’ll point to Russ as the issue. I disagree — taking a half to get his rhythm should be expected. Moreover, Westbrook made some amazing passes, particularly when in motion. Can he (and the team) learn from this loss? Absolutely, but this loss isn’t on Westbrook If anything he was one of the key reasons the Thunder had a shot to win.
