OKC Thunder: The adaptability of Westbrook’s game as he enters his 30’s
Teamwork trust
To further emphasize, on average Westbrook has shot 81.3 percent of his field goals from the 2-point range in his career (35.2 percent from within 3 feet); only a measly 18.6 percent have been assisted. In comparison, LeBron James, another ultra-high usage star, experienced 35.7 percent of his 2-point field goals assisted.
Additionally, Westbrook’s touches per game last season were, with two high-usage stars in Paul George and Carmelo Anthony, 95.7 per game; for comparison, in his all-time high usage MVP season, he averaged 94.8 per game.
Players are quick to cite Westbrook as a great teammate (even former teammates). Moreover, Westbrook has exemplified work ethic and what to do to grow and improve. Victor Oladipo cited Russ as the example he followed.
In order to preserve his energy with age, diminish wear and tear on his body, and increase scoring efficiency, Westbrook will have to start trusting his teammates with the ball and learn to exist without it.
