Despite making the right play in the closing seconds of OKC’s loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, critics continue to ostracize Russell Westbrook.

Down two with least than seven seconds to go, Russell Westbrook ran a high screen and roll with Paul George, receiving space to attack the paint where New Orleans superstar Anthony Davis was squaring up to take on Russ at the rim.

Russ had four options.

  • Take on 6’10, defensive stud AD at the hoop
  • Pull-up for a likely contested mid-range jumper over AD
  • Make a tough pass to Steven Adams down low while Cheick Diallo draped all over him
  • Hit an open Alex Abrines for three

Of all four options, the Brodie made the decision to hit the Spaniard for the three and the win but the shot just didn’t go down. The most confusing aspect of this play is the criticism Westbrook is receiving from media outlets and the teams own fan base.

On FS1’s Undisputed, TV personality Skip Bayless hones in on the final play and suggests Westbrook didn’t attack the rack because of his lack of confidence at the line. NFL Hall of Famer  Shannon Sharpe pushed back saying the Brodie made the correct decision and also believes this was a set play design.

Russ has evolved exponentially as a player this season and has elected to make the right play over hunting for glory. So what is everyone whining about?
