3 takeaways from OKC Thunder 105-103 loss to Dallas
Get Steven Adams the ball
Even if you didn’t see the game, the box score tells the story. Steven Adams put up five shots in 38 minutes of action and that’s not going to cut it.
The big Kiwi is averaging 16 points on 11.3 attempts per game and has been punishing opposing bigs on the block. While not a natural offensive big man, Adams has become a threat on the block with opposing teams sending double-teams to deter the 25-year-old from scoring down low.
Oklahoma City’s biggest issue is they do not look for Adams in the post enough. The big man got three of his field goals to drop in the first half.
Russ backs Dennis Smith Jr. down in the post and finds Adams for the lob after Jordan comes over to help.
Two offensive possessions later, Adams gets the switch on Maxi Kleber and punishes him on the low block.
Adams third bucket came by way of a goal tend. Dorian Finney-Smith comes over from the weak side after the Kiwi backs down Dwight Powell inside for the left hook.
Adams attempted two shots in the second half including a 3-pointer with the clock running down but got no shots in the fourth. This is inexcusable since the big man has become a staple in Oklahoma City’s offense and a reliable source of points.
OKC need to look for Adams in their next match-up. DeAndre Jordan is an elite shot blocker but he’s not defensive stud down low. Adams improved offensive game and thick frame give him a distinct advantage over the former Clippers big man.
The Thunder would be foolish not to use it in their next encounter.
