A reason that Thunder should stand pat at the trade is NOT the idea that the Warriors will inevitably win the title this season. For some reason, it’s easy to forget Golden State was a Chris Paul hamstring tear and all-time shooting collapse away from losing in the conference finals.
It’s a pipe dream, but the Warriors can be beaten, especially if DeMarcus Cousins causes some conflict both on and off the court. If The Thunder could somehow acquire a player like Trevor Ariza from the collapsing Wizards without giving up too much in return, that’s a move you have to make for a shot at taking down Golden State
It’s obviously a nice feeling to know your team is trying to make a strong push for title contention. But with two more years of Paul George, there isn’t an imminent need to push all the chips to the center of the table.
Eventually, the Thunder should consider making an all-in move and probably should have during Durant’s final season. But right now, the Thunder should consider playing the long game while simultaneously staying ready if the perfect opportunity awaits.
