Marquette University (2013-2015)

After being pursued by a number of suitors which included Memphis and the Rutger’s College Basketball team, Burton pledged his allegiance to Marquette in the Summer of 2013. The then 21-year-old accepted an all-expenses-paid scholarship to the University believing he would become a starter with the team.

However, Burton was largely used as a rotation player, appearing in 32 games averaging just 6.9 points and 2.2 rebounds in 12.2 minutes of action. While his playing time was bare, Burton provided some highlight reel moments to earn himself respect among college basketball fans.

One of his biggest highlights at Marquette came on the break against Wisconsin Lutheran College. After a steal, Burton recovers the ball and elevates to the hoop for the one-handed flush.

While Burton earned himself on the All-Rookie Big East team in his freshman year, he struggled mightily with off-court issues, lack of professionalism and attitude problems. Burton was clearly talented but his habits off the court ultimately stopped him from ascending at Marquette.

Burton played in just eight games the following season before transferring to Iowa State in hopes of increased playing time and a more prominent role. Interestingly, Burton forfeited his paid scholarship at Marquette to become a fee-paying student at Iowa State due to the lack of basketball scholarships at the school.
