Nerlens Noel Season Review: Will vital OKC Thunder reserve be back in 2020?
By Alex Mcewen
Looking Ahead to the Summertime
During his exit interview, Noel discussed his potential free agency and stated he loves this team (the Thunder), but he will leave the decision to stay, up to his agent. While his focus would be on improving his game and his workout regimen. I found this answer encouraging; because for the better part of the season, the majority thought Noel was as good as gone.
Decoding his comments sounds as if his agent will search for a better contract for his client, but if he doesn’t find one, Noel will continue to bet on himself, remaining in Oklahoma City. Nerlens also added playoff hunger will drive him. It’s important to note this was the first season Noel has appeared in the playoffs.
More from Thunderous Intentions
- Stealing one player from every Southwest Division team for the OKC Thunder
- Should the OKC Thunder chase after a disgruntled hometown hero?
- 3 OKC Thunder players who can step up in Aleksej Pokusevski’s absence
- Aleksej Pokusevski sidelined approximately 6 weeks with ankle injury
- Damian Lillard does not fit with the OKC Thunder
Will he want to remain with a playoff contender, or get paid by a lottery squad? The answer will reveal itself in due time, just remember he has been on both sides of the equation now.
An overlooked aspect to watch will be the NBA is trending away from paying large sums for players who provide Noel’s skill set. Teams are currently seeking stretch fives, akin to Marc Gasol, Karl-Anthony Towns or Nikola Jokic. But, much like teammate Steven Adams, Noel did not attempt a single trey this past season.
Overall, Noel’s shot-blocking added a caveat to Thunder’s defense that had not been seen since the prime years of Serge Ibaka. His emergence has potentially made starting center Steven Adams expendable; just as Adams once did with Ibaka.
If Sam Presti was to package Adams, and the 21st overall pick on draft night to move up, and/or secure an all-star level player the deal should not be shocking. Then instead of departing in free agency, Noel would assuredly stay put in Oklahoma City.
There is a lot to be decided in the coming months for the Thunder, the dominos could begin falling on draft night.
